Keeping Oil Alive

I was recently featured in Arts to Hearts Project’s piece “5 Oil Painters Who Remind Us Why This Medium Will Never Fade.” To be included alongside other artists who share such a deep love for oils feels both humbling and affirming.

Oil has always been at the centre of my practice. It’s slow, unruly, and sometimes stubborn, but that’s exactly why I love it. The drying time allows space to wrestle with a painting, to layer, scrape back, and re-enter until the work reveals something true. It carries history in every brushstroke, but also a kind of intimacy that keeps me coming back.

The Wonder Series, and more recently my Impromptu portraits, are built on that foundation. Each painting is a conversation with the medium as much as it is with the sitter, a way of slowing down, of making room for connection.

Being part of this feature reminded me that while trends come and go, oil painting still has a heartbeat that refuses to quieten. It remains alive because artists continue to find new ways to use it to tell human stories.

A huge thank you to Arts to Hearts Project for the feature. You can read the full article here: https://artstoheartsproject.com/5-oil-painters-keeping-the-medium-alive/
